Network Hardware Support Assistant

In-Person, Part-time Position

As an integral part of the Network Engineering division within Georgia Tech’s Office of Information Technology, the Network Services team provides engineering and technical support of network electronics hardware and software in a multi-tiered, distributed network environment.

Group Description

Within the Network Services team, the backbone team supports over 2,500 switches across 200+ buildings to provide more than 200,000 wired data network ports, the wireless team supports approximately 7,000 wireless access points across the Georgia Tech campus to  provide wireless connectivity for about 35,000 client devices, the firewall team supports over 1,000 firewalls enforcing 120,000+ network security rules, and the development team creates and maintains tools to enhance the customer experience and make all of the above more manageable and efficient.

Job Description

This position will work with full-time Network Services team members to deploy data network hardware for the Access Layer Refresh project, as well as locate, scan, and document Network Services assets during the annual inventory audit cycle.

Note: Applicant must be comfortable with being physically on campus to complete assigned tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with team members to receive, prepare, transport, and install network electronics in campus buildings
  • Utilize network management, monitoring, and documentation tools
  • Follow established inventory procedures to audit network equipment locations and update existing documentation
  • Assist full-time network support engineers on other tasks as assigned

Preferred Skills/Experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience with TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, and network troubleshooting would be beneficial (but not required) for the position

Impact & Influence

This position will interact on a consistent basis with OIT Network Services staff and occasionally with IT staff from other departments.
